Abstract   Progesterone and estrogen regulate cellular proliferation, and their receptors ere identified in the nuclei of cancer ce11s such as breast, endometrium, ovary, kidney and brain. Presence of progesterone receptor(PR) in breast cancer is very impotant to the endocrine therapy. Determination af progesterone receptor was usually carried out immunohistochemistry using frozen section, but frozen section had a prablem of freezing artifact. In recent years, immunohistochemistry for PR was available ta paraffin section. In this study, another attempt to immunohistochemical stain for PR in paraffin sections of 53 cases of breast cancer done. The results were as follows. I) In immunohistochemistry for PR, in 22 of 46 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinoma were revealed positive reation, and 3 cases of medullary carcinoma. 3 cases of mucinous carcinoma, 1 case of infiltrating lobular carcinoma were negative. 2) Lymph node metastasis was identified in 7 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinoma which were positive for PR and 9 cases of negative reaction for PR. 3) Immunohistochemistry for PR in paraffin sections of breast cancer has a good advantage in preservation of tissue architecture and retrospective study. The determination of PR in paraffin sections of breast cancer may be useful to the endo- crine therapy and useful in retrospective study.
